Kandhar Bhuikot Fort
The Kandhar Bhuikot Fort is located in Kandhar Taluka of Nanded district, approximately 45 km from Nanded headquarters.
According to inscriptions, the fort was first constructed by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I in 758 CE. Initially built of earth, it was later completed in stone by Rashtrakuta king Krishna III in 941 CE.
The fort spreads over an area of about 24 acres and is surrounded by a moat measuring nearly 100 feet in width and 25 feet in depth.
It has two layers of fortification, a total of 32 bastions, and four entrance gates.
Within the fort complex, remains of several structures can be seen, including the Queen’s Palace, Durbar Hall, Baradari, Jal Mahal, Gunpowder Store, Zenana, Bathing Rooms, Lal Mahal, Mosque, Gardens, and Granaries.
The fort houses several cannons, among which the Ambari Cannon, mounted on the Ambari Bastion and made of ashtadhatu (eight-metal alloy), is the largest.
Inscriptions in Persian, Arabic, Sanskrit, and Prakrit are also found here.
The Kandhar Bhuikot Fort is regarded as one of the major historical and tourist attractions of Nanded district.
